Tokyo has no single centre. It is a collection of districts that each grew around a railway station, and the practical consequence for a visitor is that the city has several downtowns — Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Ueno — none of which is the one true middle. Getting between them is trivial; the rail network is dense, punctual and signed in English, and an IC card covers all of it.

The contrasts are close together rather than spread out. A wooden temple approached through a market street sits a few stops from the busiest pedestrian crossing on earth, and a quiet residential lane of low houses and potted plants is usually one turn off whichever main road you are on. The city rewards wandering more than most, because the interesting parts are rarely the ones on the main street.

It is a large city to sleep in and the choice of room types is unusually wide — business hotels with small efficient rooms, capsule hotels, ryokan with tatami floors, and international chains at the top end. Choosing a district near a station you will use often does more for a trip here than choosing a particular hotel.

Best areas to stay in Tokyo

Shinjuku

Built around the busiest railway station in the world, which makes it the most connected place to stay in the city. Skyscrapers on one side, the lantern-lit alleys of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho on the other, and Shinjuku Gyoen park a short walk from both.

Shibuya

Younger and louder, centred on the scramble crossing. Good for nightlife, shopping and being in the middle of things, and within walking distance of Harajuku and the Meiji Shrine. Noisier at night than Shinjuku, which is saying something.

Asakusa

Old Tokyo, around the Senso-ji temple. Lower buildings, traditional shops, and the most atmospheric part of the city to wake up in. Further from the nightlife districts, and generally the best value of the main visitor areas.

Ginza & Tokyo Station

The upmarket shopping district and the main intercity rail hub next to it. Central, expensive, and the obvious base if you are taking the Shinkansen out to Kyoto or Hakone during your stay.

Ueno

Around the park and its cluster of museums, with the Ameyoko market street alongside. Well connected, noticeably cheaper than Shinjuku or Ginza, and convenient for the airport train.

Things to do in Tokyo

Senso-ji

The city's oldest temple, in Asakusa, approached through the Nakamise shopping street.

The Meiji Shrine

A forest shrine beside Harajuku, entered under enormous wooden torii.

Shibuya Crossing

The scramble intersection, best watched from a window above it.

Shinjuku Gyoen

A large garden of three styles — Japanese, English and French — inside the city.

Tsukiji Outer Market

The lanes of food stalls and knife shops that stayed when the fish auction moved.

Ueno Park

The park and its run of national museums, plus a zoo and a pond.

Golden Gai

A few Shinjuku alleys of tiny bars, most seating fewer than ten people.

A day trip to Hakone or Nikko

Hot springs and mountain views, or shrines in cedar forest — both reachable and back in a day.

When to visit Tokyo

Best months: Oct – Nov

Oct – Nov
Clear, cool and dry, with autumn colour late in the period. The best window.
Dec – Feb
Cold and dry, often bright. Quietest apart from the New Year period.
Mar – May
Mild and increasingly pleasant. Cherry blossom season falls in spring and its exact timing moves each year.
Jun – Sep
The rainy season into a hot, very humid summer. Typhoons are possible late in it.

Rate level is indicative and describes the season, not your dates. The price on each hotel above is for the dates shown, and is confirmed at booking.

Earn cashback on every Tokyo booking

Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. Frequently asked questions about Tokyo

Where should I stay in Tokyo?

Shinjuku for a first visit — it is the most connected point in the city, so everywhere else is a short train ride, and it has the widest range of rooms. Shibuya suits a younger trip, Asakusa is the most atmospheric and usually the best value, Ginza or Tokyo Station make sense if you are taking the Shinkansen out during your stay, and Ueno is a cheaper well-connected alternative.

How many nights do I need in Tokyo?

Four is a sensible minimum — the city has several distinct districts and trying to do them in two leaves you doing none of them properly. Five or six lets you add a day trip to Hakone or Nikko, and repeat visitors routinely spend a week without running out of neighbourhoods.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

October and November are clear, cool and dry, with autumn colour arriving towards the end. Spring is the other strong season and brings cherry blossom, though the exact timing shifts by a week or more each year, so it cannot be booked to a date with confidence. June to September is the rainy season followed by a hot and very humid summer.

Do I need to speak Japanese to visit Tokyo?

No. Rail signage, station announcements and most restaurant menus in visitor areas carry English, ticket machines have an English mode, and IC transport cards remove most of the situations where you would need to ask. A few polite phrases go a long way, but nothing about a visit here depends on them.

How much does a hotel in Tokyo cost?

The range is unusually wide, because the city has a genuine market in small, efficient business-hotel rooms as well as capsule hotels, ryokan and international chains. Rates rise sharply in the peak spring and autumn windows and around the New Year. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.

Do I earn cashback on Tokyo hotels too?

Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
