Tokyo has no single centre. It is a collection of districts that each grew around a railway station, and the practical consequence for a visitor is that the city has several downtowns — Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Ueno — none of which is the one true middle. The contrasts are close together rather than spread out. A wooden temple approached through a market street sits a few stops from the busiest pedestrian crossing on earth, and a quiet residential lane of low houses and potted plants is usually one turn off whichever main road you are on. The city rewards wandering more than most, because the interesting parts are rarely the ones on the main street.
It is a large city to sleep in and the choice of room types is unusually wide — business hotels with small efficient rooms, capsule hotels, ryokan with tatami floors, and international chains at the top end. Where should I stay in Tokyo?
Shinjuku for a first visit — it is the most connected point in the city, so everywhere else is a short train ride, and it has the widest range of rooms.
