Hanoi is the older and more reserved of Vietnam's two big cities — a thousand-year-old capital built around lakes, with a dense tangle of a medieval quarter at its heart and a French-planned district of villas and boulevards beside it. It moves at a different speed from Ho Chi Minh City, and most people who compare the two end up preferring one strongly.
The Old Quarter is the reason. Its streets were named for the trades that worked them, many still cluster by trade, and the whole quarter is a few square kilometres of shophouses, street kitchens, motorbikes and pavement stools. Eating here is done at knee height on a plastic seat, and it is some of the best food in the country.
It is also the gateway to northern Vietnam — Ha Long Bay to the east, Sapa and the mountains to the northwest, Ninh Binh to the south — so the city is usually the start or the end of a longer loop rather than a destination on its own.

Frequently asked questions about Hanoi
Where should I stay in Hanoi?
The Old Quarter for a first visit — it is where the atmosphere and the street food are, it is walkable to Hoan Kiem Lake, and it has hotels at every price. It is also loud from early morning, so if that matters, the French Quarter around the lake is a few minutes away and calmer. Tay Ho by West Lake is the most relaxed option and the furthest out.
How many nights do I need in Hanoi?
Two or three covers the city itself — the Old Quarter, the lake, the Temple of Literature and a museum. Most people then use it as a base for Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh, which adds a night or two each, so four to five nights around Hanoi is a common shape for a northern Vietnam trip.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi?
October and November are dry, mild and clear, and the most comfortable months. Unlike southern Vietnam, Hanoi has a real winter — December to February is cool to cold and often grey with fine drizzle. May to September is hot, humid and wet, with the lowest room rates.
Is Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City better to visit?
They are genuinely different cities. Hanoi is older, cooler in climate, more compact and more traditional, with the Old Quarter and the northern mountains behind it. Ho Chi Minh City is hotter, larger, faster and more commercial, and is the base for the Mekong Delta. Many trips do both, connected by a short flight or the long train down the coast.
How much does a hotel in Hanoi cost?
Hanoi is inexpensive by regional standards, with a deep supply of small family-run hotels in the Old Quarter alongside restored colonial properties and international brands near the lake. Rates are highest in the October to November window. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Hanoi hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
