Manila is the entry point to the Philippines and one of the densest urban areas anywhere. The name does two jobs: the City of Manila is the old core on the bay, with the walled Spanish quarter of Intramuros and Rizal Park in it, while Metro Manila is the sixteen-city conurbation around it that contains Makati, Bonifacio Global City and the airport. Almost everything a visitor books is in the metro rather than the city, and the distinction matters mainly because it explains the distances.
The history is unlike anywhere else in the region — three centuries of Spanish rule followed by American administration, which is why the old quarter has stone gates and baroque churches, why the country is largely Catholic, and why English is spoken almost universally. Intramuros and the museums around Rizal Park are where that is most visible.
The rest of the experience is modern and commercial: very large malls, a serious restaurant and bar scene in Makati and BGC, and traffic that is genuinely among the world's worst. Distances that look trivial can take an hour, which is the single most useful thing to know before booking anything.

Frequently asked questions about Manila
Where should I stay in Manila?
Makati for most visits — the broadest hotel choice, the restaurants and bars, and streets that are pleasant to walk. BGC is newer, greener and easier on foot but further from the historic sights. Ermita and Malate put you next to Intramuros and Rizal Park at lower prices, and Pasay makes sense if you have an early flight.
How many nights do I need in Manila?
Two is enough for Intramuros, Rizal Park and the museums, plus an evening in Makati or BGC. Most travellers treat it as an entry and exit point for the islands rather than a stay in itself, and give it a night at each end.
When is the best time to visit Manila?
December to February is the coolest and driest stretch and comfortably the best window. March to May is hot and dry, with May the severe end of it. June through November is the wet season, with typhoons possible and street flooding common enough to disrupt a short trip.
What is the difference between Manila and Metro Manila?
The City of Manila is the old core on the bay, containing Intramuros, Ermita and Rizal Park. Metro Manila is the surrounding conurbation of sixteen cities, which includes Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Pasay and the airport. Most hotels described as being "in Manila" are in the metro rather than the city, and given the traffic, the difference is worth checking before you book.
How much does a hotel in Manila cost?
Good value for the standard, with international brands in Makati and BGC priced below their equivalents in Singapore or Hong Kong, and a much cheaper tier around Ermita and Malate. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Manila hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
