Manila is the entry point to the Philippines and one of the densest urban areas anywhere. The name does two jobs: the City of Manila is the old core on the bay, with the walled Spanish quarter of Intramuros and Rizal Park in it, while Metro Manila is the sixteen-city conurbation around it that contains Makati, Bonifacio Global City and the airport. Almost everything a visitor books is in the metro rather than the city, and the distinction matters mainly because it explains the distances.
The history is unlike anywhere else in the region — three centuries of Spanish rule followed by American administration, which is why the old quarter has stone gates and baroque churches, why the country is largely Catholic, and why English is spoken almost universally. Intramuros and the museums around Rizal Park are where that is most visible.
The rest of the experience is modern and commercial: very large malls, a serious restaurant and bar scene in Makati and BGC, and traffic that is genuinely among the world's worst. Distances that look trivial can take an hour, which is the single most useful thing to know before booking anything.

Where should I stay in Manila?
Makati for most visits — the broadest hotel choice, the restaurants and bars, and streets that are pleasant to walk. BGC is newer, greener and easier on foot but further from the historic sights. Ermita and Malate put you next to Intramuros and Rizal Park at lower prices, and Pasay makes sense if you have an early flight.
