Taipei sits in a basin at the northern end of Taiwan, surrounded by green mountains that are close enough to be part of the city — there are hiking trails that start at a metro station, and hot springs inside the city limits at Beitou. It is a capital with a low skyline, one very tall building, and a great deal going on at street level.
The night markets are the thing it is known for and they deserve it, but they are one part of a food culture that runs from breakfast shops selling soy milk and fried dough through to some of the best regional Chinese cooking anywhere. The city eats late and eats out, and a lot of a visit here is deciding what to eat next.
It is also easy. The MRT is clean, cheap and signed in English, an EasyCard covers transport and convenience stores, and the city is widely regarded as one of the safest and friendliest in the region to walk around at any hour.

Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. Frequently asked questions about Taipei
Where should I stay in Taipei?
Ximending for a first visit — central, well connected, lively at night and full of mid-range rooms. Taipei Main Station is the most practical if you are arriving late or taking trains out of the city. Da'an is quieter, greener and more comfortable, Zhongshan has the boutique hotels, and Xinyi is the modern high-end district around Taipei 101.
How many nights do I need in Taipei?
Three covers the city — the tower, a couple of night markets, a temple and the National Palace Museum. Four or five lets you add Beitou's hot springs, a hike on Yangmingshan or Elephant Mountain, and a day out to Jiufen on the coast, which is the addition most people are glad they made.
When is the best time to visit Taipei?
October to December is the most reliable window — warm easing into cool, with clearer skies than the rest of the year. January to March is cool and often damp. July to September is hot, very humid and the typhoon season, though it also carries the lowest room rates.
Is Taipei easy to visit without Mandarin?
Yes. Metro signage and announcements are in English, an EasyCard removes most ticketing, and English is common enough in hotels and visitor areas. Night market stalls and small local restaurants are more hit-and-miss, though pointing and a translation app cover it — and the city has a strong reputation for people going out of their way to help.
How much does a hotel in Taipei cost?
Taipei is generally better value than Tokyo, Seoul or Hong Kong, with a deep supply of clean mid-range and business hotels alongside hostels and the newer high-end towers in Xinyi. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Taipei hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
