Singapore is a city, an island and a country at once, which is why it feels so unlike its neighbours. It sits almost on the equator, it is small enough to cross by train in under an hour, and it runs on a level of organisation that makes it the softest possible landing for a first trip to Southeast Asia — and, for the same reason, the one people sometimes accuse of being too smooth.
That reputation undersells it. The city is genuinely multicultural rather than decoratively so: Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam are working neighbourhoods with their own food, temples and mosques, and the hawker centres where most of the country eats are cheap, excellent and everywhere. Above them sits the other Singapore — Marina Bay, the Gardens, the towers — and the two coexist within a few MTR stops of each other.
It is also compact enough that where you stay matters less than in most cities. The MRT is fast and reaches everything, so the decision is more about what you want outside your door in the evening than about how far you will have to travel.

Earn cashback on every Singapore booking
Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →
Frequently asked questions about Singapore
Where should I stay in Singapore?
Marina Bay if the waterfront and the Gardens are the point of the trip and the budget allows it. Chinatown and Kampong Glam give you more character and better food for less money, both a few MRT stops away. Orchard Road is the safe central default with the widest choice of rooms, and Little India is the cheapest central option. The MRT is fast enough that none of these is a bad decision.
How many nights do I need in Singapore?
Two or three is enough to see the city properly — Marina Bay and the Gardens, a couple of the older neighbourhoods, and several hawker centres. A fourth night makes room for Sentosa, the Botanic Gardens or the Night Safari without rushing. Many people pass through on the way somewhere else and give it a night, which is a shame.
When is the best time to visit Singapore?
February to April is hot and comparatively dry, and the most reliable stretch of the year. Singapore sits almost on the equator, so it is warm and humid in every month and rain is possible in all of them — the November to January monsoon is simply wetter and heavier, not colder.
Is Singapore expensive?
Hotels and alcohol are expensive by regional standards; food and transport are not. Eating at hawker centres costs a fraction of what a restaurant meal costs and is what most residents do, and the MRT is cheap and reaches nearly everywhere. Accommodation is the line item that will define your budget here.
How much does a hotel in Singapore cost?
It is one of the more expensive cities in Southeast Asia to sleep in, with rates varying sharply between the Marina Bay waterfront and neighbourhoods like Little India or Chinatown a few minutes away by MRT. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Singapore hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
