Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor — the largest religious monument on earth — and the reason most travellers come to Cambodia at all. The town itself is small, which means where you stay matters less for distance than for atmosphere: the riverside is quiet and green, the streets around Pub Street are loud until two in the morning, and the roads out towards the temples trade walkability for space, pools and silence.

Old French Quarter & Pub Street
The centre of the night economy. Bars, night markets and restaurants packed into a few blocks, with hostels and mid-range hotels stacked above them. Stay here if you want to walk home; avoid it if you want to sleep before midnight.
Riverside (Wat Bo)
Away from the noise, and a different town entirely. Leafy streets along the Siem Reap River, boutique hotels in converted villas, and some of the better independent restaurants. The most common recommendation from repeat visitors.
Charles de Gaulle / Temple Road
The road running north towards Angkor. Larger resorts with big pools and gardens, aimed at travellers who want to be first through the gate at sunrise. You will need a tuk-tuk for dinner.
Sala Kamreuk & the south
Residential, cheaper, and where a lot of the newer small guesthouses have opened. Good value if you are staying more than a few nights and do not mind riding into town.
