Seoul sits in a bowl of mountains on the Han River, and both facts shape it. The river splits the city — the older half north of it, the newer districts including Gangnam to the south — and the mountains mean that a serious hike is reachable on the metro from almost anywhere in town. Between them is one of the densest and most restless cities in Asia.
The old and new are stacked rather than separated. Grand Joseon-era palaces sit in the middle of the business district, a village of traditional tiled houses survives on a hillside between two of them, and the streets around both are lined with cafes, cosmetics shops and towers. The contrast is not curated; it is just what happened when a city this old rebuilt this fast.
It is a late city. Markets, restaurants and whole districts run well past midnight, the metro is fast, cheap and signed in English, and taxis fill the gap when it stops. Very little about a stay here requires planning around opening hours.

Earn cashback on every Seoul booking
Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →
Frequently asked questions about Seoul
Where should I stay in Seoul?
Myeongdong for a first visit — it is central, has the widest choice of hotels, and puts the main palaces and the old centre within walking distance. Insadong and Jongno are more characterful and quieter at night. Hongdae suits a trip built around nightlife, and Gangnam makes sense mainly if your reasons for being in the city are south of the river.
How many nights do I need in Seoul?
Three covers the palaces, Bukchon, a market or two and an evening in Hongdae or Myeongdong. Four or five gives you the Han River, a hike up Bukhansan or Namsan, and time on both sides of the river without rushing between them.
When is the best time to visit Seoul?
September to November — clear, dry, cool, and with autumn colour on the mountains that ring the city. Spring is the other good season and brings blossom, though its timing moves year to year. Winter is genuinely cold, often well below freezing, and summer is hot and humid with a concentrated monsoon.
Is Seoul easy to get around?
Yes. The metro is extensive, fast and cheap, with English signage and announcements, and a T-money card works on the metro, buses and in taxis. The city is also more walkable than its size suggests once you are within a district, and taxis are affordable when the metro stops for the night.
How much does a hotel in Seoul cost?
The range runs from guesthouses and small business hotels through to international chains, with Gangnam generally the most expensive district and the north-bank neighbourhoods better value. Rates climb in the autumn and spring peaks. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Seoul hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
