Seoul sits in a bowl of mountains on the Han River, and both facts shape it. The river splits the city — the older half north of it, the newer districts including Gangnam to the south — and the mountains mean that a serious hike is reachable on the metro from almost anywhere in town. Between them is one of the densest and most restless cities in Asia.
The old and new are stacked rather than separated. Grand Joseon-era palaces sit in the middle of the business district, a village of traditional tiled houses survives on a hillside between two of them, and the streets around both are lined with cafes, cosmetics shops and towers. The contrast is not curated; it is just what happened when a city this old rebuilt this fast.
It is a late city. Markets, restaurants and whole districts run well past midnight, the metro is fast, cheap and signed in English, and taxis fill the gap when it stops. Very little about a stay here requires planning around opening hours.

Frequently asked questions about Seoul
Where should I stay in Seoul?
Myeongdong for a first visit — it is central, has the widest choice of hotels, and puts the main palaces and the old centre within walking distance. Insadong and Jongno are more characterful and quieter at night. Hongdae suits a trip built around nightlife, and Gangnam makes sense mainly if your reasons for being in the city are south of the river.
How many nights do I need in Seoul?
Three covers the palaces, Bukchon, a market or two and an evening in Hongdae or Myeongdong. Four or five gives you the Han River, a hike up Bukhansan or Namsan, and time on both sides of the river without rushing between them.
When is the best time to visit Seoul?
September to November — clear, dry, cool, and with autumn colour on the mountains that ring the city. Spring is the other good season and brings blossom, though its timing moves year to year. Winter is genuinely cold, often well below freezing, and summer is hot and humid with a concentrated monsoon.
Is Seoul easy to get around?
Yes. The metro is extensive, fast and cheap, with English signage and announcements, and a T-money card works on the metro, buses and in taxis. The city is also more walkable than its size suggests once you are within a district, and taxis are affordable when the metro stops for the night.
How much does a hotel in Seoul cost?
