Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, lying off the southwest coast in the Gulf of Thailand — closer to Cambodia than to most of Vietnam. Roughly half of it is national park, the west coast holds a long run of sand facing the sunset, and a scatter of smaller islands sits off the southern tip.

It has changed quickly. Resort development along the west coast and in the south has been substantial, and parts of the island now look nothing like they did a decade ago, while the northern and eastern coasts remain much quieter and harder to reach. Which version of Phu Quoc you get depends almost entirely on where you book.

The island has its own airport with direct flights from mainland Vietnam and elsewhere in the region, which makes it an easy add-on to a longer trip — and, for a lot of people, the part of that trip where nothing was scheduled.

Best areas to stay in Phu Quoc

Long Beach (Bai Truong)

The long west-facing strip running south from Duong Dong, and where most of the island's accommodation is. Sunset views, the widest choice of resorts and restaurants, and the busiest stretch of sand.

Duong Dong

The island's main town, at the north end of Long Beach — the night market, the harbour and the everyday shops. Cheaper and more ordinary than the resort strip, and useful if you want somewhere to walk in the evening.

Ong Lang

North of Duong Dong, a quieter run of coast with smaller resorts spread along it and less development between them. A good compromise between the beach and the crowds.

The south & An Thoi

The southern end, with the port for the archipelago boats and the newest large-scale development. Departure point for island-hopping, and a long way from Duong Dong.

The north & east

Bordering the national park, with far fewer places to stay and rougher access. The quietest part of the island, and the least practical without your own transport.

Where should I stay in Phu Quoc?

Long Beach on the west coast for most visits — it has the sunset views, the widest choice of resorts and restaurants, and the shortest trips to everything else. Ong Lang just north is quieter with more space between properties. The south around An Thoi is where the boat trips leave from, and the north and east are the quietest but need your own transport.

How many nights do I need in Phu Quoc?
