Phnom Penh is built around Chaktomuk, the four-armed confluence its riverfront faces — the name means "four faces", and it is where the Mekong and the Tonlé Sap come together and leave again as the lower Mekong and the two branches of the Bassac. The city has been arranged around that meeting of water for as long as it has existed. It is Cambodia’s capital and its largest city, and it is the one destination in the country where the hotel market is genuinely deep in every direction at once — hostels, family guesthouses, serviced apartments, boutique conversions of French colonial villas, and international towers looking out over the water.
Most travellers give the city two or three days on the way to or from the coast, which is usually one day fewer than it deserves. The Royal Palace, the National Museum and the riverside promenade are all within walking distance of each other; Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek are the harder and more necessary half of the visit. Where you stay changes the trip more here than it does elsewhere in Cambodia, because the districts are genuinely different from one another rather than variations on a single centre.

Earn cashback on every Phnom Penh booking
Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →
Frequently asked questions about Phnom Penh
What’s the best area to stay in Phnom Penh?
Riverside and Daun Penh put you within walking distance of the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the promenade, which suits a short first visit. BKK1 is quieter, greener and better for a longer stay, with the city’s densest run of independent cafes and restaurants. Toul Tom Poung, around the Russian Market, is cheaper again and more residential.
How many nights do I need in Phnom Penh?
Two full days covers the Royal Palace, the National Museum, the riverside and a half-day at Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek. A third day is worth it if you want the markets and the neighbourhoods rather than only the landmarks.
When is the best time to visit Phnom Penh?
November to February is dry and noticeably cooler, and it is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year. March to May is very hot. From June to October the rain comes in short heavy bursts, mostly in the afternoon, and room rates are at their lowest.
How much does a hotel in Phnom Penh cost?
The range is wide — the capital has everything from hostel dorms to international five-star towers. The hotel list on this page is priced live for your dates rather than quoted from a guidebook, so the figures you see are the ones you would actually pay.
How much money do I get back booking Phnom Penh hotels?
The rate is printed on each hotel before you book, so you never have to guess at it. It is credited to your DerLeng balance as LENG once your stay is complete, and from there you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out.
Do I have to pay in crypto to earn the cashback?
No. You book and pay for the room in the ordinary way. The rewards are what arrive in your DerLeng balance afterwards — keeping them as LENG, converting to USDC or withdrawing is entirely your choice.
