Manila is the entry point to the Philippines and one of the densest urban areas anywhere. The name does two jobs: the City of Manila is the old core on the bay, with the walled Spanish quarter of Intramuros and Rizal Park in it, while Metro Manila is the sixteen-city conurbation around it that contains Makati, Bonifacio Global City and the airport. Almost everything a visitor books is in the metro rather than the city, and the distinction matters mainly because it explains the distances.

The history is unlike anywhere else in the region — three centuries of Spanish rule followed by American administration, which is why the old quarter has stone gates and baroque churches, why the country is largely Catholic, and why English is spoken almost universally. Intramuros and the museums around Rizal Park are where that is most visible.

The rest of the experience is modern and commercial: very large malls, a serious restaurant and bar scene in Makati and BGC, and traffic that is genuinely among the world's worst. Distances that look trivial can take an hour, which is the single most useful thing to know before booking anything.

Best areas to stay in Manila

Makati

The main business district, with the widest choice of international hotels, restaurants and bars, and the best-maintained streets for walking. The default base for most visits, business or otherwise.

Bonifacio Global City (BGC)

A newer planned district east of Makati — wide pavements, parks, malls and modern hotels. The most comfortable part of the metro to walk around, and further from the historic sights.

Ermita & Malate

In the City of Manila proper, near Intramuros, Rizal Park and the bay. The closest base to the history and the cheapest of the central options, older and rougher around the edges than Makati.

Pasay & the bay

South along Manila Bay towards the airport, with the entertainment complexes and the cruise terminal. Convenient for flights, and a long way from the old city in traffic.

Quezon City

North of Makati, large, residential and the least visited by foreigners. Cheaper, with a strong local food scene, and dependent on the traffic for everything.

Things to do in Manila

Intramuros

The walled Spanish colonial quarter, with San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago inside it.

Rizal Park

The park at the edge of the old city, with the national monument and museums around it.

The National Museum complex

Fine arts, anthropology and natural history, in three buildings by the park.

Manila Bay at sunset

The reason the baywalk exists, and the city's best free hour.

Binondo

One of the oldest Chinatowns anywhere, and the best eating in the old city.

Ayala Museum

A well-presented history and art collection in the middle of Makati.

BGC's street art

Large-scale murals through the newer district, walkable in an afternoon.

A day trip to Tagaytay

Ridge views over Taal Lake and its volcano, south of the metro.

When to visit Manila

Best months: Dec – Feb

Dec – Feb
The coolest and driest stretch. Comfortably the best time to be here.
Mar – May
Hot and dry, building to genuinely severe heat by May.
Jun – Aug
The wet season, with typhoons possible and street flooding common.
Sep – Nov
Still wet and typhoon-prone, easing towards November.

Rate level is indicative and describes the season, not your dates. The price on each hotel above is for the dates shown, and is confirmed at booking.

Earn cashback on every Manila booking

Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →

Frequently asked questions about Manila

Where should I stay in Manila?

Makati for most visits — the broadest hotel choice, the restaurants and bars, and streets that are pleasant to walk. BGC is newer, greener and easier on foot but further from the historic sights. Ermita and Malate put you next to Intramuros and Rizal Park at lower prices, and Pasay makes sense if you have an early flight.

How many nights do I need in Manila?

Two is enough for Intramuros, Rizal Park and the museums, plus an evening in Makati or BGC. Most travellers treat it as an entry and exit point for the islands rather than a stay in itself, and give it a night at each end.

When is the best time to visit Manila?

December to February is the coolest and driest stretch and comfortably the best window. March to May is hot and dry, with May the severe end of it. June through November is the wet season, with typhoons possible and street flooding common enough to disrupt a short trip.

What is the difference between Manila and Metro Manila?

The City of Manila is the old core on the bay, containing Intramuros, Ermita and Rizal Park. Metro Manila is the surrounding conurbation of sixteen cities, which includes Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Pasay and the airport. Most hotels described as being "in Manila" are in the metro rather than the city, and given the traffic, the difference is worth checking before you book.

How much does a hotel in Manila cost?

Good value for the standard, with international brands in Makati and BGC priced below their equivalents in Singapore or Hong Kong, and a much cheaper tier around Ermita and Malate. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.

Do I earn cashback on Manila hotels too?

Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
