Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years, and it is the city that best survived the twentieth century — which is why the temples, gardens and wooden machiya houses that people picture when they picture Japan are mostly here. It sits in a basin ringed by wooded hills on three sides, laid out on a grid that makes it unusually easy to navigate for a city of its age.

It rewards a slower approach than Tokyo. The best of Kyoto is in walking a temple district in the early morning before the coaches arrive, or following a canal path between neighbourhoods, rather than in getting between sights efficiently. Buses cover what the two subway lines do not, and a bicycle works well on the flat central grid.

It is also small enough that the popular places concentrate. Certain temples and one particular bamboo grove are extremely busy through the middle of the day in peak season, and the same places an hour after opening are a different experience entirely.

Best areas to stay in Kyoto

Gion & Higashiyama

The eastern districts below the hills, and the most atmospheric place to stay — wooden houses, lantern-lit lanes and a run of major temples within walking distance. The most expensive area, and the one worth paying for if the architecture is why you came.

Kyoto Station

The transport hub in the south, with the Shinkansen, the bus terminal and the widest choice of rooms at every price. Not beautiful, and very practical — particularly if you are doing day trips or arriving late.

Downtown (Kawaramachi & Pontocho)

The central shopping and eating district around the Kamo river, with the covered Nishiki market and the narrow bar alley of Pontocho. Central, lively in the evening, and a short walk across the river to Gion.

Arashiyama

At the western edge, against the hills, with the bamboo grove and the river. Quiet in the evening once the day visitors leave, which is its main argument — and a fair way from the centre, which is the counter-argument.

Northern Higashiyama

Around the Philosopher's Path and Ginkaku-ji, north of the main temple cluster. Residential, calm and green, with smaller guesthouses. Good on a second visit or a longer stay.

Things to do in Kyoto

Fushimi Inari

The mountainside shrine and its tunnels of vermilion torii, open at any hour.

Kinkaku-ji

The gold-leafed pavilion above its reflecting pond, in the northwest of the city.

Kiyomizu-dera

The temple on its great wooden platform over the Higashiyama hillside.

The Arashiyama bamboo grove

A path through dense green bamboo at the western edge of the city.

Gion in the evening

Wooden tea houses and lantern light in the old entertainment district.

Nishiki Market

A long covered market street of food stalls and knife shops downtown.

The Philosopher's Path

A canal-side walk between temples in the northern hills, lined with cherry trees.

Nijo Castle

The shogun's Kyoto residence, with its gardens and famously creaking floors.

When to visit Kyoto

Best months: Oct – Nov

Oct – Nov
Cool, clear and dry, with autumn colour arriving in the hills. Peak season.
Dec – Feb
Cold and often bright, occasionally snowy. The quietest months.
Mar – May
Mild and pleasant. Cherry blossom falls in spring and its timing shifts each year.
Jun – Sep
The rainy season into a hot, humid summer. Kyoto's basin holds the heat.

Rate level is indicative and describes the season, not your dates. The price on each hotel above is for the dates shown, and is confirmed at booking.

Earn cashback on every Kyoto booking

Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. Frequently asked questions about Kyoto

Where should I stay in Kyoto?

Gion and Higashiyama if the old architecture is the reason for the trip — lantern-lit lanes and a cluster of major temples on foot, at the highest prices in the city. Downtown around Kawaramachi is central and better for eating and nightlife. Kyoto Station is the practical choice with the widest range of rooms, and Arashiyama suits people who want the western hills quiet in the evening.

How many nights do I need in Kyoto?

Three is the realistic minimum — the temple districts are spread across opposite edges of the city and cannot be done in a day without rushing all of them. Four or five lets you take mornings slowly, which is when Kyoto is at its best, and leaves room for Arashiyama or a trip out to Nara.

When is the best time to visit Kyoto?

October and November are cool, clear and dry, with autumn colour in the surrounding hills. Spring is the other peak and brings cherry blossom, though its exact timing moves year to year and cannot be booked to a date with confidence. Summer is hot and humid — the city sits in a basin that holds the heat — and winter is cold, bright and much quieter.

Is Kyoto or Tokyo better to visit?

They answer different questions. Tokyo is the larger, faster, more contemporary city with far more choice in food and nightlife; Kyoto is where the temples, gardens and traditional architecture survived. Most trips to Japan include both, connected by a Shinkansen ride of a few hours, rather than choosing between them.

How much does a hotel in Kyoto cost?

The range runs from hostels and small business hotels to ryokan with tatami rooms and kaiseki dinners, with Gion and Higashiyama commanding the highest rates and the Kyoto Station area generally the best value. Prices rise sharply in the spring and autumn peaks. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.

Do I earn cashback on Kyoto hotels too?

Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
