Kampot is a riverside town in Cambodia’s south, built along the Praek Tuek Chhu with the Bokor massif rising across the water. Its centre is a grid of French colonial shophouses, a good number of them restored, and there is a man-made beach on the riverbank between the two bridges where the town gathers at sunset. The atmosphere is the main reason people come — it is relaxed rather than quiet, with a proper run of restaurants, cafes and bars along the river and through the old town.

The town has grown, and so has the choice of places to stay: restored shophouse rooms in the old town, hotels along the river, and more of both than there were a few years ago. Much of the rest of what draws people here is a short ride out — the pepper country the region is named for, the caves in the limestone hills, and the road up to Bokor National Park, which is a good one and climbs to a plateau that has itself been considerably developed.

Best areas to stay in Kampot

The Old Town

The colonial grid near the river, and where most of the restaurants, bars and cafes are. Rooms are in restored shophouses and small hotels, and everything is walkable. The right choice if you want to eat well without arranging transport for it.

The old steel truss bridge across the Kampot River, its spans reflected in flat water with the town along the far bank

The riverfront

Along the water at the edge of the old town, with the town beach on the bank between the two bridges and Bokor on the skyline across the river. Some of Kampot’s better rooms and its best sunsets, close enough to walk into the centre and far enough to sleep.

Along the river

Places set along the riverbanks away from the centre, most of them built around the water with decks and gardens. Calm and green, and far enough out that you will want a scooter or a driver for dinner in town.

Things to do in Kampot

Bokor National Park

The plateau above the town, reached by a good mountain road, with the view back down over the coast.

Rows of pepper vines trained up wooden poles on a Kampot plantation, a sand path running between them

Kampot pepper country

The plantations in the countryside around the town, growing the crop the region is named for.

The riverfront beach

A man-made beach on the river in the middle of town, between the two bridges, where people gather at sunset to watch the light go down over Bokor.

Phnom Chhngok cave temple

A brick shrine standing inside a limestone cave in the hills outside the town.

Kampot pepper crab

The dish the whole region is known for.

Earn cashback on every Kampot booking

Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →

Frequently asked questions about Kampot

Where should I stay in Kampot — the town or the river?

The old town keeps you walking distance from the restaurants and bars, in restored colonial shophouses. The places set along the river outside the centre are calmer and built around the water, but you will want a scooter or a tuk-tuk every time you go in for dinner. Neither is better; they are two quite different stays in the same town.

How many nights should I spend in Kampot?

Three is the usual answer. One for the town itself, one for Bokor, and one for the pepper country and the caves. People who plan two nights very often stay longer, because Kampot does not encourage hurrying.

Is Bokor worth the trip?

Yes. Bokor National Park sits on the plateau above Kampot, reached by a good mountain road, and it has been developed a great deal — there is considerably more up there now than the old hill-station ruins most guidebooks describe. Go on a clear day in the dry season; in the wet months the top is often in cloud.

When is the best time to visit Kampot?

November to February is dry and cooler, and it gives the clearest views from Bokor — the mountain sits in cloud for much of the wet season. March to May is very hot. June to October is green and cheap, with heavy but usually short afternoon rain.

How much do hotels in Kampot cost?

The choice has widened as the town has grown, from simple riverside rooms to polished boutique hotels. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so the figures shown are the real ones rather than a guidebook estimate.

How does the cashback work on a Kampot booking?

Each property shows its own rate before you book. After your stay the money back is credited to your DerLeng balance as LENG, and you can keep it, convert it to USDC, or withdraw it. You pay for the room in the ordinary way — no part of the booking has to be in crypto.
