Jakarta is Indonesia's largest city and its commercial centre — a sprawling, low-slung metropolis on the north coast of Java with a spine of towers running through the middle of it. Most foreign visitors pass through on the way to Bali, Yogyakarta or the outer islands, and a good number never leave the airport, which is a reasonable decision and also means they miss what is there.
What is there is not a sightseeing city. Jakarta is a place to eat, to shop, and to see how the country actually works: the old Dutch harbour quarter at Kota Tua, the national museum, the enormous Istiqlal mosque facing the cathedral across the road, and a restaurant scene that draws on every part of the archipelago. The traffic is as bad as its reputation, and the MRT line that opened along the main north-south corridor has made a real difference along its route and none at all off it.
It is best approached as a stop of a night or two, chosen deliberately, rather than as a destination in itself — and it is the country's main international gateway, so most itineraries touch it whether or not they intend to.

Frequently asked questions about Jakarta
Where should I stay in Jakarta?
Central Jakarta around Thamrin and Menteng for a short visit — it is near the monument, the museums and the MRT, which is the only reliable way to move north to south. Sudirman and SCBD suit business trips and have the newest hotels. Kemang is more relaxed and much further out. For an early flight, a hotel near Soekarno-Hatta is a sensible choice rather than a compromise.
How many nights do I need in Jakarta?
One or two. It is not a sightseeing city, and the traffic means a packed itinerary here costs more time than it does anywhere else on this list. A night on arrival or before an onward flight, with an afternoon in Kota Tua and a serious dinner, is what most people find is the right amount.
When is the best time to visit Jakarta?
June to September is the dry season and the most comfortable window — still hot and humid, but with far less rain. December to February is the wettest stretch, and flooding is a recurring problem in parts of the city during it.
Is Jakarta worth visiting?
As a destination in its own right it is a harder sell than most cities on this list — it is sprawling, congested and short on conventional sights. As a stop of a night or two it is worth doing properly: the old harbour quarter, the national museum, and food from across the archipelago that is difficult to find assembled anywhere else.
How much does a hotel in Jakarta cost?
Jakarta is good value for the standard of hotel, particularly in the business districts where international brands compete for weekday corporate demand and often soften at weekends. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Jakarta hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
