Hong Kong is built on both sides of a working harbour: Hong Kong Island on one shore with its towers stacked up the slope of Victoria Peak, Kowloon on the other, and the Star Ferry crossing between them as it has for well over a century. It is one of the densest cities anywhere, and one of the easiest to move around — the MTR reaches almost everything a visitor wants, and what it does not reach a tram, a ferry or a short taxi ride will.
The thing that surprises people is how quickly the city stops. Country parks cover a large part of the territory, and trails like the Dragon's Back run along ridges within half an hour of the financial district. A stay here can be entirely urban — dim sum, night markets, the harbour after dark — or it can be half spent on hillsides and outlying islands, and the transport makes switching between the two trivial.
Where you stay changes the trip more than it does in most cities, because the harbour is a real divide. Island-side puts you among the towers and the bars; Kowloon-side gives you the view back at them. Both are well served by the MTR, so neither is a wrong choice — they are different ones.

Frequently asked questions about Hong Kong
Where should I stay in Hong Kong?
Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side suits most first visits: it faces the Island skyline, it is well connected by MTR, and it is generally better value than an equivalent address in Central. Stay in Central or Sheung Wan if you want to be among the towers and the bars and do not mind paying for it. Wan Chai is the middle ground, and Mong Kok is the cheapest and most local-feeling of the options.
How many nights do I need in Hong Kong?
Three covers the city itself — the Peak, the harbour, the markets and a proper dim sum meal or two. Four or five lets you add Lantau and the Big Buddha, a hike along the Dragon's Back, or a ferry out to Lamma or Cheung Chau, which is where a lot of people say the trip turned from good to memorable.
When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?
October to December — dry, mild and clear, which is exactly what you want in a city built on a hillside with a view worth seeing. January to March is cool and often grey but quiet. April to June turns humid, and July to September is hot, wet and the typhoon season, with the lowest room rates of the year to match.
Is Hong Kong easy to get around without a car?
Yes, and a car would be a hindrance. The MTR reaches nearly everywhere a visitor goes, the Star Ferry crosses the harbour constantly, trams run along the north of Hong Kong Island, and ferries serve the outlying islands. An Octopus stored-value card works across all of them.
How much does a hotel in Hong Kong cost?
It is one of the more expensive cities in Asia to sleep in, and rooms are small by international standards at every price level — that is a function of the land, not the hotel. Rates vary sharply by district, with Central highest and Kowloon generally better value. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Hong Kong hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
