Ho Chi Minh City — still widely called Saigon, including by most of the people who live in it — is Vietnam's largest city and its commercial centre. It is hotter, faster and less formal than Hanoi, with a French-era grid at its core, a growing cluster of towers along the Saigon River, and traffic that is genuinely one of the sights.
Most of what a short visit wants is in District 1: the cathedral and the old post office, the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, Ben Thanh Market, and a dense run of restaurants, rooftop bars and coffee shops. Vietnamese coffee culture is at its most developed here, and an afternoon spent working through it is not a wasted one.
It is also the usual base for the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi tunnels, both close enough to do in a day, which is why a lot of itineraries give the city more nights than its sights alone would suggest.

Earn cashback on every Ho Chi Minh City booking
Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →
Frequently asked questions about Ho Chi Minh City
Where should I stay in Ho Chi Minh City?
District 1 for a first visit — the museums, the colonial landmarks, Ben Thanh Market and most of the restaurants and rooftop bars are in or beside it. Pham Ngu Lao at its western end is the budget option and is noisy. Thao Dien across the river is calmer and more residential, and District 3 is a cheaper, quieter alternative within walking distance of the centre.
How many nights do I need in Ho Chi Minh City?
Two covers the city centre comfortably. Three or four makes room for the Cu Chi tunnels and a day in the Mekong Delta, which are the two trips most people build their stay around, and leaves an evening for the food and coffee rather than sightseeing.
When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?
December to March is the dry season and the most comfortable time — warm, with lower humidity than the rest of the year. April and May are the hottest months. The wet season from June onwards brings heavy afternoon downpours that usually pass quickly, with September to November the wettest and the cheapest.
Is it called Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon?
Both are in everyday use. Ho Chi Minh City is the official name and what you will see on documents and signage; Saigon remains extremely common in speech, in business names, and as the airport code SGN. Neither will confuse anyone locally.
How much does a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City cost?
It is one of the better-value large cities in the region, with a deep supply of small hotels and guesthouses alongside international brands in District 1 and newer river-side towers. Rates are highest in the December to March dry season. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Ho Chi Minh City hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
