Ho Chi Minh City — still widely called Saigon, including by most of the people who live in it — is Vietnam's largest city and its commercial centre. It is hotter, faster and less formal than Hanoi, with a French-era grid at its core, a growing cluster of towers along the Saigon River, and traffic that is genuinely one of the sights.

Most of what a short visit wants is in District 1: the cathedral and the old post office, the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, Ben Thanh Market, and a dense run of restaurants, rooftop bars and coffee shops. Vietnamese coffee culture is at its most developed here, and an afternoon spent working through it is not a wasted one.

It is also the usual base for the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi tunnels, both close enough to do in a day, which is why a lot of itineraries give the city more nights than its sights alone would suggest.

Best areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

District 1 (Dong Khoi)

The centre — the colonial buildings, the main museums, the smartest hotels and most of the rooftop bars. Walkable, well served by taxis and ride-hailing, and the shortest distance to nearly everything a first visit wants.

Pham Ngu Lao

The long-standing backpacker quarter, still in District 1 but at its western end. Cheap rooms, travel agencies, and a loud bar street. Convenient and good value; not quiet.

Thao Dien (District 2)

Across the river, leafy and low-rise, with international restaurants, cafes and a large expatriate community. Calmer and more comfortable than the centre, and a bridge and a taxi ride away from it.

District 3

Immediately north of District 1, residential and less visited, with tree-lined streets and some of the better local eating. Cheaper than the centre and close enough to walk into it.

Binh Thanh

North of District 1 along the river, where much of the newer high-rise development is. Modern apartment-style stays and river views, with less street life at ground level.

Where should I stay in Ho Chi Minh City?

District 1 for a first visit — the museums, the colonial landmarks, Ben Thanh Market and most of the restaurants and rooftop bars are in or beside it. Pham Ngu Lao at its western end is the budget option and is noisy. Thao Dien across the river is calmer and more residential, and District 3 is a cheaper, quieter alternative within walking distance of the centre.
