Dubai is the largest city of the United Arab Emirates, built along a stretch of Gulf coast and out into the desert behind it. Most of what a visitor sees was put up within the last few decades — the tower blocks of Downtown, the marina, the artificial islands — and the speed of that is the thing people react to first, in one direction or the other.

The older city is still there and is worth the trip across for. Deira and Bur Dubai sit on either side of the creek that the city grew from, with gold and spice souks, wind-tower houses in the Al Fahidi quarter, and small wooden abras ferrying people across the water for a few fils. It is a completely different experience from the malls, and it is fifteen minutes away on the metro.

Between the two are the beaches, the desert, and a food scene that reflects a population drawn from all over — which for many people ends up being the most memorable part of a stay.

Best areas to stay in Dubai

Downtown Dubai

The district around the Burj Khalifa and the fountain, with the largest concentration of high-end hotels and the shortest walk to the headline sights. Expensive, polished, and the obvious base for a short first visit.

Dubai Marina & JBR

A dense cluster of towers around a man-made marina, with a beach and a promenade of restaurants. More relaxed than Downtown and better if you want to swim, and a fair way from the old city.

Jumeirah

The low-rise coastal strip of beaches and resorts between the marina and the centre. Where the beach hotels are, and quieter at street level than either tower district.

Deira & Bur Dubai

The old city on both sides of the creek — souks, the Al Fahidi historic quarter, and the abra crossings. By far the cheapest place to stay and the most interesting to walk, with older and simpler hotels.

Business Bay

Immediately south of Downtown, mostly newer apartment towers and hotels. Cheaper than Downtown for a similar location, with less at ground level.

Where should I stay in Dubai?

Downtown if it is a short first visit and you want the Burj Khalifa and the fountain on your doorstep. Dubai Marina or JBR if you want a beach and a promenade rather than malls. Jumeirah is the low-rise beach-resort strip. Deira and Bur Dubai are much cheaper and far more interesting to walk, at the cost of being away from the modern districts.

How many nights do I need in Dubai?

Three or four covers the modern city, the old creek quarter and a desert trip without rushing. Many people arrive on a stopover of one or two nights, which is enough for Downtown and not much else. A beach-led stay works at any length.

When is the best time to visit Dubai?

November to March — warm, dry and comfortable, and the whole city is usable outdoors. This is the reverse of most of Asia: June to August brings severe heat and high humidity that confines outdoor activity to early morning and late evening, and it is the low season with the lowest room rates for exactly that reason.

Is Dubai expensive?

It can be, and it does not have to be. Hotels in Downtown and the marina, alcohol and the headline attractions are expensive; the metro is cheap, the old city has inexpensive hotels and food, and the beaches are free. The spread between a Deira stay and a Downtown one is very wide, which makes the choice of district the main budget decision.

How much does a hotel in Dubai cost?

Rates vary more by season and district here than in most cities — the winter peak and the summer low are far apart, and Deira costs a fraction of Downtown.
