Da Nang sits halfway down Vietnam's coast, where a long straight beach meets a river and the mountains come down to the sea. It has grown very fast — the beachfront strip and the run of bridges across the Han river are almost entirely recent — and it is now the country's main coastal city rather than the stopover it used to be.

The setting does most of the work. My Khe beach runs for kilometres along the eastern edge of the city, the Son Tra peninsula rises immediately north of it, and the Hai Van Pass climbs out of town along the coast with what is widely held to be one of the best road views in the country. The Marble Mountains sit between the city and the coast to the south.

It is also the natural base for the region: the old town of Hoi An is a short drive south, and the imperial city of Hue is over the pass to the north. A lot of visitors stay here and go out from it, which suits a city with a good beach and comparatively little to see in its own centre.

Best areas to stay in Da Nang

My Khe Beach & An Thuong

The beachfront strip east of the river, where most of the resorts and the majority of visitors are. An Thuong just behind it holds the restaurants, bars and smaller hotels. Walkable, and the reason most people come.

The Han riverside

The city side of the water, along the river and the bridges. Closer to the everyday city, the markets and the night-time bridge displays, and a short ride from the beach.

Son Tra peninsula

The forested headland north of the beach, with a handful of larger resorts on its slopes and the Lady Buddha statue above the bay. Quiet and scenic, and dependent on transport for everything.

Non Nuoc & the south

The southern end of the beach towards the Marble Mountains, with larger resort properties and more space between them. Closer to Hoi An, further from the city.

Things to do in Da Nang

My Khe Beach

Kilometres of sand along the city's eastern edge, with the mountains at either end.

The Marble Mountains

Limestone outcrops south of the city, with caves, shrines and steps to the top.

The Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills

The gold walkway held up by two enormous stone hands, inland from the city.

The Hai Van Pass

The coastal mountain road north towards Hue, best on two wheels or in a slow car.

Son Tra peninsula

Forest, viewpoints and the Lady Buddha above the bay.

The Museum of Cham Sculpture

The main collection of Cham artefacts, in the city centre.

A day in Hoi An

The lantern-lit old town a short drive south, and the most common trip out of Da Nang.

The Dragon Bridge

The river bridge that breathes fire on weekend evenings.

Frequently asked questions about Da Nang

Where should I stay in Da Nang?

The My Khe beachfront for most visits, with An Thuong just behind it if you want restaurants and bars within walking distance rather than a resort. The Han riverside puts you closer to the everyday city and the bridges. Son Tra and the southern end of the beach are quieter and more scenic, and both need transport.

How many nights do I need in Da Nang?

Two or three for the city and the beach. Most people give it four or five and use it as a base — Hoi An to the south and the Hai Van Pass and Hue to the north are the two trips that fill those extra days, and the Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills are both half-days.

When is the best time to visit Da Nang?

February to May is dry, warming and comfortable, with a calm sea — the best combination. June to August is hot, dry and the busiest domestic holiday season. September to November is the wet stretch and this coast does get typhoons, so it is the window to avoid if the beach is the point.

Is Da Nang better than Hoi An to stay in?

They suit different trips. Da Nang has the long city beach, the bigger hotel choice and the airport; Hoi An has the historic old town and a much smaller, quieter scale. They are a short drive apart, so many people base themselves in one and spend a day in the other rather than splitting the stay.

How much does a hotel in Da Nang cost?

The beachfront runs from small hotels behind the strip to large international resorts directly on the sand, at rates well below what an equivalent beach would cost in Thailand. Prices peak in the June to August domestic season. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.

Do I earn cashback on Da Nang hotels too?

Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
