Battambang sits on the Sangkae river in Cambodia’s northwest, in the middle of the country’s ricelands. It has the best-preserved run of French colonial shophouses in Cambodia and a real arts scene — Phare Ponleu Selpak, the circus and arts school whose graduates perform in Siem Reap, is based here — and it is the sort of city people stop in on the way somewhere else and then wish they had given another day.

The city has grown, and the choice of places to stay with it: a couple of dozen properties, most of them in or near the centre, running from straightforward guesthouses to restored colonial buildings and comfortable mid-range hotels. It is a smaller market than Siem Reap’s and a more relaxed city to spend time in, which for a lot of people is the reason to come. Worth booking ahead in the dry season.
