Bangkok is the hinge of mainland Southeast Asia — the flight everyone connects through, and a city large and layered enough that a lot of people who meant to pass through end up staying. The Chao Phraya river runs through the middle of it, the old royal city sits on one bank, and a dense modern centre of towers, malls and skytrain lines has grown up east of it.
The two halves are genuinely different places. Rattanakosin, the old quarter, is temples, palaces, markets and low buildings, best covered on foot and by river boat. Sukhumvit and Silom are air-conditioned, vertical and fast, and connected by the BTS skytrain and the MRT underground — which are the only reliable way to beat the traffic, and the reason to stay near a station rather than near a sight.
The eating runs the full range, from a plastic stool on a pavement to the region's densest concentration of high-end restaurants, and the street food is genuinely as good as its reputation. Most trips end up organised around it whether or not that was the plan.

Earn cashback on every Bangkok booking
Every stay you book through DerLeng Free pays you back. The rate is shown on each hotel before you book, and it lands in your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay — hold it at a fixed value, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally; the cashback is simply what comes back afterwards. See how it works →
Frequently asked questions about Bangkok
Where should I stay in Bangkok?
Near a BTS skytrain or MRT station, almost regardless of district — the traffic is the thing that will define your trip otherwise. Sukhumvit has the widest choice and the best transport, Silom is well placed between the old and new city, Riverside is calmer with boat access to the temples, and Rattanakosin puts you among the sights at the cost of having no rail station.
How many nights do I need in Bangkok?
Three covers the old city, the river, a market and a couple of proper meals. Four or five lets you take the temples slowly in the morning heat, add Chatuchak if a weekend falls right, and see something outside the centre. Many people also use it as the hub for onward flights across the region.
When is the best time to visit Bangkok?
November to February is the cool season — dry, less humid and by far the most comfortable time to walk around a city where walking is most of the experience. March to May is genuinely hot, with April the peak. The rains arrive from around June, heaviest in September and October, and room rates fall accordingly.
What should I wear to visit the temples in Bangkok?
Shoulders and knees covered is the constant, and it is enforced at the major sites — the Grand Palace turns people away daily. Specific requirements vary between temples and change, so treat covered shoulders and knees as the minimum and check the site you are visiting rather than assuming one rule covers all of them. Light long clothing is more comfortable in the heat than it sounds.
How much does a hotel in Bangkok cost?
Bangkok is one of the best-value large cities in the world for accommodation, with a very deep supply running from hostels through a large mid-range to a substantial luxury tier along the river and in Sukhumvit. Rates are highest in the November to February cool season. The list on this page is priced live for your dates, so you are seeing real figures rather than an estimate.
Do I earn cashback on Bangkok hotels too?
Yes — the rate is shown on each property before you book, exactly as it is everywhere else on DerLeng Free. It is credited to your balance as LENG after your stay, and you can hold it, convert it to USDC, or cash it out. You pay for the room normally.
