Bali is a single Indonesian island that manages to hold several unrelated holidays at once. The south is beaches, surf breaks and a long strip of restaurants and beach clubs; the middle is terraced rice fields, river gorges and Ubud; the east and north are quieter, with volcanoes, dive sites and villages that see a fraction of the traffic. Choosing between them matters more than choosing a hotel.

It is also, unlike most of Indonesia, predominantly Hindu, and the religion is visible everywhere — daily offerings on doorsteps and pavements, temples on cliffs and in lakes, and ceremonies that close roads without warning. That texture is a large part of why the island holds people's attention beyond the beaches.

The trade-off is traffic. The south is genuinely congested and distances that look short on a map can take a long time, so a plan that hops between Seminyak, Ubud and Uluwatu every day will spend a lot of it in a car. Most people who enjoy Bali pick one base, or split the trip in two.

Best areas to stay in Bali

Seminyak

The established south-coast base — beach clubs, restaurants and a broad range of places to stay, from small hotels to private villas. Central for the south, busy, and the most convenient if you want to walk to dinner.

Ubud

Inland, among rice terraces and river valleys, and the cultural centre of the island. Yoga, galleries, temples and walks rather than beaches. Cooler than the coast and a long, slow drive from it.

Canggu

North of Seminyak — surf breaks, cafes and a large long-stay crowd. More relaxed than Seminyak, spread out along lanes rather than concentrated, and best with a scooter or regular rides.

Uluwatu & the Bukit

The limestone peninsula at the island's southern tip. Cliff-top views, serious surf and the clifftop temple. Quieter and more spread out, and far from everything else on the island.

Sanur

Where should I stay in Bali?

It depends entirely on the trip. Seminyak is the central, convenient south-coast base with the most within walking distance. Ubud is inland among rice terraces and suits a trip about culture and landscape rather than beaches. Canggu is more relaxed and surf-oriented, Uluwatu is dramatic and remote, and Sanur is calm and residential. Many people split a week between a coastal base and Ubud rather than choosing one.

How many nights do I need in Bali?
