Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s deep-water port and its main beach city, sitting on a headland on the Gulf of Thailand with sand on three sides of it. For most travellers it is two things at once: a stretch of coast in its own right, and the place the islands are reached from, because the fast ferries to Koh Rong and its neighbours leave from here.

It is a proper city rather than a resort strip, and the beaches along it are genuinely different from one another — Ochheuteal is the busy one with everything on it, Otres is the long stretch to the south, and the smaller beaches sit on the other side of the headland near the older part of town. Accommodation runs the full range, from guesthouses to large beachfront hotels. Pick the beach first and the property second; it decides more about the stay than the star rating does.

Best areas to stay in Sihanoukville

A red-railed jetty running out from the sand at Ochheuteal Beach with fishing boats moored along it

Ochheuteal Beach

The main beach and the longest of them, lined end to end with restaurants, bars and hotels of every grade. The easiest place to stay — you can walk to dinner, and you will not have the sand to yourself.

A wooden shelter with benches standing among flowering scrub on the sand at Otres Beach, the sea and casuarina pines behind it

Otres Beach

The long stretch of sand south of the centre, more spread out than Ochheuteal and set back from the busiest part of town. A mix of beachfront places and smaller hotels just behind them.

Serendipity

The beach and the strip at one end of Ochheuteal, and one of the busiest corners of the city for eating and drinking. Central, walkable, and the least quiet option on this list.

Independence & Victory Beach

The smaller beaches on the other side of the headland, near the port and the older part of the city. A different feel from the main strip, and a base for anyone who would rather be in the city than on the beach road.

Things to do in Sihanoukville

The ferry to Koh Rong

Fast boats cross from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong and the neighbouring islands.

Ream National Park

Mangrove channels, forest and coastline on the edge of the city.

Sunset over a small forested island off Otres Beach, seen under the branches of a pine on the shore

Otres

The long southern beach, for a day with nothing scheduled in it.

The seafood

This is a working fishing port, and the catch is sold and cooked all over the city.

Frequently asked questions about Sihanoukville

Which beach should I stay on in Sihanoukville?

Ochheuteal is the main beach and the easiest to stay on, with restaurants and bars along its length. Otres is the longer, more spread-out stretch to the south. Independence and Victory are the smaller beaches on the other side of the headland, closer to the older part of the city. They are genuinely different places, so it is worth choosing deliberately.

How do I get from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong?

By fast ferry from Sihanoukville across to Koh Rong and the neighbouring islands. Sea crossings depend on the weather, so check the current sailings locally or with your hotel when you book rather than relying on a schedule published in advance.

When is the best time to visit Sihanoukville?

November to April is the dry season, with calm water and the most reliable beach weather, and it is when the city is busiest. The wet season from May to October brings heavy rain and a rougher sea, along with the emptiest beaches and the lowest room rates of the year.

Should I stay in Sihanoukville or go straight to the islands?

Both are worth doing, and most people do both. Sihanoukville is a full city with a long beachfront, a wide choice of hotels and somewhere to eat on every corner. The islands are quieter and the water is clearer. The ferries leave from here, so a night either side of an island trip is an easy plan.

How much cashback do I earn on a Sihanoukville hotel?

Each hotel shows its own rate before you book, so it is never a surprise at checkout. The money back is credited to your DerLeng balance as LENG after your stay, and you can keep it, convert it to USDC, or withdraw it.

Do I need to pay in crypto to earn rewards?

No. You pay for the room normally, however the hotel takes payment. The cashback is simply what lands in your DerLeng balance afterwards.
